Default Would you reintroduce the Lynx?

Would you reintroduce a predator to control the deer population?
Could we not eat them?... I know that won't be a popular view (bambi ) but the thought of them and other animals being ripped to shreds by a wild cat isn't that attractive either.

'Lynx are to be reintroduced into the wild in Britain after a 1,300-year absence, under an ambitious “rewilding” plan drawn up by a conservation charity.

The Lynx UK Trust would release up to 18 of the cats onto private estates in Aberdeenshire, Cumbria and Norfolk if the idea is given the go-ahead by Natural England and Scottish Natural Heritage.

The predators eat deer, rabbits and hares among other animals but are not considered a risk to people as they tend to stay away from humans.

Dr Paul O’Donoghue, who advises the trust, told The Sunday Times: “The lynx is one of the most enigmatic, beautiful cats on the planet. The British countryside is dying, and lynx will bring it back to life.”

same

But I'm not sure reintroducing a wild cat like that is such a good idea, they'll probably end being hunted themselves or attacking people or domestic pets or farm animals

I think the idea would be to restore them to their natural habitats, rural areas in the Scottish highlands etc., where there aren't even farmed animals let alone people or domestic pets. Areas that are being completely destroyed by out of control deer population. As the food source (all of those pesky deer!) is plentiful they would have no reason to move closer to any civilisation... most people might never see a lynx in their entire life, let alone be attacked by one. They would be very wary of humans.

mmm maybe, it is a shame that such a beautiful animal has been killed off by humans but I could see history repeating itself eventually which would be sad

I don't know, people didn't know the effect it would have on the ecosystem before they were all killed off the first time. Overpopulations of deer can completely destroy land, and it was landowners that decided it was a good idea to kill off the predators the first time. Thinking that it would all be the same but minus the "dangerous" animals. But the knock on impact on the food chain (no predators AT ALL capable of taking down large herbivorous animals) gave them free reign to just go forth and multiply .

Sort of like humans, to be fair...

....hmm, this sounds a bit like The Jurassic Park, don't worry, it's all very safe for the human population..

not really, humans and lynx (and wolves!) coexisted just fine in Britain for tens of thousands of years up until very recently, and they weren't wiped out because they were any danger to humans.

The deer and rabbit populations in Scotland are completely out of control at this point because stupid humans removed natural predators like the lynx and wolves... so yes, if they can be reintroduced then they should be.

No, because sadly I don't think the human race can be trusted with such an animal

Are rabbits and deer not a food source, why are people eating infected horses when there's all this meat hopping and running about?

Because they're wild and would have to be hunted, which isn't economical! We need big fat juicy cows that just sit in a field waiting to be killed .

Personally I would try and encourage people to eat venison, a good low fat meat.
A bullet from a hunter might be more humane than being attacked by a big cat,
Certainly could be quite a lucrative business for the area as well.
