With Peggy's death on the horizon, who do you prefer from the original batch of matriarchal figures—her, Pat Evans/Butcher/Wicks/whatever, or Pauline Fowler?

I'd say Pauline > Pat > Peggy, personally.

I hated how miserable they made her in her final year and the disgraceful exit storyline she got but then 2006 is one of EastEnders' worst ever years. It's never been quite the same since she died.

Absolutely. I think she represents the history of EastEnders fairly well. Started off as a realistic depiction of a down-to-earth, working mum, grew more and more miserable as the years went on, and went in a blaze of sensationalism after becoming unrecognisable. The awful treatment Wendy Richard got in her final year is probably what tarnishes the legacy of Pauline.

One of the stupidest decisions the producers have ever made along with bumping off Angie and Kathy (I know the latter's been reversed but still).
