Newly-engaged Andy West sparked an argument in the Big Brother 2016 house yesterday when Hughie Maughan and Ryan Ruckledge joked that they’d decided to get married.

Earlier this week, Andy’s long-term boyfriend Ed visited the house as part of the loyalty shopping task, and got down on one knee to propose.

And yesterday Hughie and Ryan got in on the action, deciding to prank the rest of the housemates by pretending the former had popped the question. “This sounds really bizarre, but he’s actually proposed to me!” claimed Ryan.

Their news was met with a dubious reaction, with Andy saying: “If they are being serious then good luck to them! It’s a very serious commitment.”



However, moments later the ex-BBC journalist became angry. Venting to Jackson in the bedroom, he muttered: “Anyone can get engaged at anytime they want to, that’s important.

“But when I think about the people who have fought for generations to do what they’ve just done… you have to mean it, be sincere. You don’t just say it! Sorry… I swear if they are taking the *******ing p*** I will lose my temper!”

Ryan and Hughie were shocked, and Hughie argued with Andy over his comparison of their prank to the campaign for same-sex marriage, which was legalised in England, Wales and Scotland in 2014.

“My point of view… people say it’s a joke, but I’m saying if it’s a joke it’s sick,” Andy commented. “You should be ashamed of yourself.”




This enraged Hughie, who accused him of trying to “twist this” and asked: “How is this sick?”

An upset Andy went to the Diary Room. “I’ve let this get to me. It does really matter,” he said. “My ring represents all of the people who’ve wanted to wear this ring before, and all of the people who want to wear it now, and they weren’t or not allowed, and that’s why two boys playing a prank matters.”

Afterwards Andy went to clear the air with Hughie, acknowledging that while he was offended, calling the prank “sick” was “too strong”.

“Me and Ryan would never joke about a huge thing like that, that we are a part of,” Hughie replied. “We had a joke and I’m sorry you’re upset about it.”

I agree.... I think this is what really got to him. He thought they were taking the piss out of his engagement (and deep down I believe they were).
I can understand him feeling uncomfortable with it because it meant so much between him and Ed.... So instead of maybe staying quiet he deflected the situation by making it about the moral issue which then made it all seem very 'deep' and a little over the top.
I think he really felt his engagement was being ridiculed...

Yeah I think this too tbh. But he couldn't actually say this (as one can't be honest, one must make things out to be 100x worse than they are) and I expect the rubbish he was coming out with instead made sense to him at the time

I agree that he felt his engagement was being mocked, but I think there was more to it than that. I think the mockery brought out deeper issues within him, like those that cost him his job over the stance he took about Tyson Fury.

As I posted in another thread regarding Ed's interview on BOTS:

ED also made the point very strongly in his own words that
"you don't ever mess with Andy when it comes to gay rights"

He referred to the Tyson Fury thing and said he told Andy to let it go, but he wouldn't and he left the job he'd had for 8 years and loved because of it.

He said he and Andy were complete opposites and that is why they work so well together.

So I think it was a combination of feeling they were mocking him and his obviously passionate feelings about gay rights - and also because he has had a hard time in there...and Jason understood more about what was happening and we never got to hear. Jason is a true friend to him, bless him.
I felt for Andy tonight. I like him so much and feel bad for him.

This has been building up. They've been driving him nuts for 3-4 weeks 24 hours a day. They're part of a generation that has no experience of how hard it used to be to be gay....they can only learn that by reading about it and these two have prob never read a book in their lives ....they have a freedom to be who they are and have no appreciation of why that is possible ....in their ignorance they are ungrateful....they're so stupid they prob can't be blamed but it is ugly to watch and not just this piss take engagement, in lots and lots of other ways too.
