[More than 250 million people have played the game since it launched two years ago, generating $2.4bn (£1.9bn) in revenue in 2018. He will split a $2.25m (£1.8m) prize after he and his teammate finished second in the first Fortnite World Cup. Jaden Ashman, who goes by the gamer name Wolfiez, will share the cash with his Dutch gaming partner David 'Rojo' Jong after the duos event in New York.] His hard work paid off. https://news.sky.com/story/essex-sch...d-cup-11772062 |

If he's wise he'll buy a couple of houses and stick tenants in them, he won't have to work through uni then.

How did he get so good? How long did he have to sit in his room playing for to win a world cup?
I hope he can now pool his energies into something constructive.

I'm sure he with his 1 million in the bank wouldn't agree with you, times have moved on, the way people are earning their living has changed and will continue to change, if he is good at it, I don't see what the issue is, according to his Mum he spends a lot of time playing and they have had many arguments about it, but I would say winning 1 million from playing something you love is pretty constructive, its no different from youtubers or being a reality star or an influencer, as it stands if he invests well and doesnt blow it he might not have to work for the rest of his life, how good is that

I've told my two sons to get into their bedrooms and not to come back out until they had won a million

My point is the time it take for him to get that good at a video fame for most teens causes a lot of problems with schoosing, relationships with parents and peers yes one in a million win a million it doesn't mean a lot of screen time is a good thing. I hope the boy has the guidance to help him with this life changing amount.

There's a LOT of money in eSports these days to be fair, Fortnight is a very new (and possibly temporary) one compared to things like DOTA2, Counter-strike, League of Legends, Overwatch and Starcraft but yeah...
I don't think it's different to most physical sports though; it's true that only a few will be good enough to make any money but that's true of tennis, football, or any other sport so . I don't think there are many kids sat at home believing its easy. People are aware that the winners of these things have a level of natural skill at the game that goes beyond just practicing a lot. Also winners tends to be younger because split second differences in reaction times really matter in high-level gaming and reaction times start to drop fast once you hit about 25. Hard to make a career out of Fortnight alone though (unless he gains a streaming / merchandise following) becaaaause fortnight isn't a purely skill based game, it incorporates a LOT of randomness and luck, so at the top level you wouldn't really expect the same people to consistently win tournaments. Too much down to chance, compared to games based on skill and tactics like CS. |

Of course there's a comparison.
He's not saying it's exactly the same but the competition aspect is certainly the same. And how some are more about skill than others that are more about pot luck or who's the fastest. It's not the same, but there's a comparison. Last edited by Marsh.; 30-07-2019 at 05:48 PM. |

I limit my son's internet time massively (he is onky 8) but now whilst I'm sat at the athletics track and tomorrow when I'm sat on the football touchline in the rain, I'll wish he was.into gaming even at his age near enough every single one of his friends spend hours playing fortnite etc
