Default Was I wrong to say charity sales woman could have been a model?

Okay, so normally I never answer the door to people I don't know or am not expecting.

Today I was expecting a parcel pick-up, so when a young lady rang the doorbell and looked like she was the courier I answered the door.

She said she was collecting on behalf of an Irish charity and could I donate on a regular basis. I said, no because I was skint.

I then went on to say I could tell she was Irish because she was a good-looking lady and, indeed, she could have been a model. She had striking features. I wouldn't normally talk like that, what with today and everyone being offended by the slightest thing.

But she rolled her eyes and walked off.

In my dad's day, ladies would acknowledge a compliment with a smile. Nowadays, paying a compliment to a lady means you're a pervert and offensive.

Could be. It's a very serious offence to make a compliment.

Haha. Well, the thing was she was very striking. Like I say I haven't said something like that for years.

I suppose you do. But where I live, you see a lot of very average faces, but when you see someone who has a perfect face, and you could see it being on telly, or on the front of a mag, then you're taken aback.

Wait a minute. .. she tried to con your bank details out of you and you're the one that feels bad?

Charities don't knock on doors its a scam, you should told her to take her pretty face off your property before you called the police.

I'm conflicted, my feelings on whether you should have said anything about her level of attractiveness if I'm honest. It's a totally innocent comment don't get me wrong, but to a stranger I can see how it could make them uncomfortable.
In this instance I'd say the rolling of the eyes was just frustration because her con hadn't worked so it was time to bail.

We get charities knocking .. giving their convincing chat then saying they can’t take a couple of quid cash and ONLY a Direct Debit will suffice

There use to be a few 'charities' knocking on my door, and in the area .. even at night after 7 & I think even 9pm one time . Claiming to be 'British heart Foundation' , ' Bernardo's ' etc.

We always told them we're not interested. I don't understand why they'd be knocking & pestering people so late in the evenings.

I was suspicious when one lady was on her own knocking on the door, and she was asking people if she could use their loo .

In that situation we're both at risk , it's like the driver & the hitchhiker analogy.

"Wrong"...?

I would say it's ****ing creepy but I know a lot of older fellers think it's fine.

That said, an old chap in his 90's once told me I "could have been a star on the silver screen" and I was quite flattered . He also then turned to my (at the time) boss and said "......you could maybe have been an extra or something HEH HEH HEH" and walked off, which was heard by all the regulars and he never quite lived it down .

You should have told her to cheer up and smile for you, that would make things right

I know you meant it as a compliment, I suppose its not much different to the agency scouts who approach people in the street and try and sign them up its a bit of a random thing to sat though

I wouldn't say anything like that nowadays tbh lol. I did see a strikingly beautiful woman in Sainsbury's the other day. It kind of knocked me back, she could tell too, but she was professional when serving me, she just kinda smiled and carried on scanning my food. It was quite awkward actually, sometimes we do see people we are instantly attracted to. But yeah, i wouldn't say anything like that in future.
