Default Simon Bird: ‘The Inbetweeners wouldn’t be made today’

Wokery at work

On The Inbetweeners, he is less equivocal. “I honestly think it wouldn’t be
commissioned today,” he says. Because of the sexism? “Yeah, and the casual
homophobia,” he adds. “I rationalise it to myself by saying that at the time it
was an accurate representation of the way teenagers talk to each other. Is that
still the case now? I assume not. Although the programme was set in the
2000s, it was based on a pilot set in 1990, so even in the 2000s it wasn’t really
an accurate reflection of how teenagers spoke.”

Anyone interested in catching it before it gets properly cancelled, can watch it here

https://www.channel4.com/programmes/the-inbetweeners

Channel 4's very own player. You may have to cancel your adblocker to watch it, but that's the price you pay for woke apps, I guess

Not only that but it's regularly shown on 4's broadcast channels. If it was true that they "absolutely wouldn't make it now" because of the content rather than the relevance, they wouldn't still be airing it.

We all know alot of the jokes in 'The Inbetweeners ' would not be accepted today, the fact that comedians like Dave Chapelle & Ricky Gervais are getting complaints ...says it all .

I don't think there's anything wrong with stating facts , just like 'Little Britain' ( which I was never a fan of) would also not be allowed today.

Ricky gervais and Dave chappelle have based their new acts around attacking the trans community, but neither of them have been cancelled, both are multi, multi, multi-millionaires, and both could phone any network or venue tomorrow and get a show right away.

You think racist comics would be allowed to do their acts without comment today? Or do you think homophobic comics shouldn't receive pushback? The obsession with a minority community trying to live their lives is just really bizarre, frankly.

Do you actually know anything about Dave Chapelle ?? , he had a trans friend who he even dedicated his comedy show to . She committed suicide .....and shock horror guess which community contributed to her death ?? , A group of angry trans activists who send her a ton of hate . Yet these same people preach about peace & acceptance .

Chapelle & Gervais challenge things others are to scared to say , neither of them hate trans people. But they're fed up with how far left things have gotten ,I know Gervais especially highlighted that .

And Chapelle from what I heard asked his friend about her transition so he could try to understand why she felt that way , which is exactly what more is needed ... education is important & respectful discussions instead of name calling.

As for 'racist' or 'sexist' comics , if a comedian is just insulting people then no it's not funny. But people should actually watch things before they call everyone offensive . A joke has to either make sense or be witty & clever & even fun satire. Not just mean remarks .

Frankie Boyle made a grotesque joke about Katie Price's son Harvey, but it's interesting how he never faced reprocussions for it . So much double standards & hypocrisy as usual. And I've never found Boyle funny.

You start off by admitting it's just what you've heard and nothing that you've read or seen for yourself or that you've backed up with anything concrete? Do you understand the issue here?

Then you move to the trans community attacking a trans person causing them to commit suicide? I'm not sure there is a lot of sense in that statement. Not saying you're wrong, but I'd need to see the full facts, not the anti-trans slant.

So Frankie Boyle - the pretend leftist. Always around when there is a cause to promote but never an ally when a true leftist had the opportunity to be elected. Did you want him to face repercussions or not, because that kind of thing would make me think that the top tax rate for the top 1% should be lowered to allow their wealth to trickle down. Is that how it works again, I'm not sure?

Once again, goldheart, you are conflating things you don't like - trans people/anyone who shows them support, with the left. It's weird, wrong, but on brand for this crazy forum.

I liked Ricky Gervais' earlier work. The office is the greatest sitcom of all time in my view, but if you think standing on a stage going "woman, penis, woman, penis, woman, penis", is in anyway speaking truth to power (go and watch Carlin and Hicks then come back to me), or challenging, then you're simply wrong. I'm guessing it's more of a mumsnet routine than a work by perhaps the most influential comedian of his generation. James Acaster summed the new Gervais style of commentary up perfectly (and I'm no fan of his, either)

You seriously think that it's brave to come out and mock the trans community, and that no one has the guts to do it? Mental.
.

He used to understand the differences between punching up or down, even when Brent used to stray into bigotry, he always made himself the butt of the joke, now he's fully invested in punching down. Good for him, he can make his money whichever way he chooses and absolutely none of my business. I just don't understand how some of the wealthiest and consistently performing artis in the last 20 years are being cancelled as they count another £50 million into their bank accounts

It’s like 30p Lee tweeting that Les Dawson wouldn’t be allowed on tv these days, while watching a Les Dawson special show on tv

there is a difference between something being cancelled that already exists and not making similar again in current times. Just thought i would point that out

Bit of a leap - he's right about the reason it wouldn't be made... it's not because of it being "so controversial", it's because if you're making a comedy about teenagers it has to reflect the teenagers of the era. Teens when I was a teen were very much like The Inbetweeners. Teens these days are not. That's not how they speak, not how they interact, not what their social circles are like... it isn't relevant. It's still funny to those of us who remember being (or knowing) that sort of teen, but it's not relevant to the teen or young adult audience itself.

They wouldn't make "Friends" today either... because 20-somethings have smartphones, use dating apps, and them living in nice big apartments in Manhattan is even more ludicrous than it was in the 90's.

Although the 90's is starting to come back in nostalgia form much like the 80's - so I guess the 2000's (inbetweeners) will have it's time again one day, probably in the 2030's.

It's not "cos they talk about girls and wanking". It's parody/satire, we're laughing AT their naive teenage boy attitudes (because we remember being them, or knowing people like them), they're not meant to be aspirational characters .

I'd also add that if one of them was non-white or if the teacher was black but played the exact same, it would be exactly the same show, so long as there was no awkward Netflix-style shoe horning.

That said I doubt anyone could play the teacher quite the same as Greg Davies, but that's really unrelated.

Have you seen any of the American version? Talk about 2 countries separated by a common language, as Churchill (I think) said.

Genuinely awful and I'll watch pretty much anything... I didn't make it through more than one episode.

I actually think it illustrates exactly why they wouldn't make it now though - it was so culturally specific to time and place that it didn't work with American teens, in the same way it wouldn't work with 2023 teens.

Simon is right though, it wouldn't be commissioned today at all. Then again, neither would Friends, and that's
still hugely popular.
