Default Mel Stride MP wants LT and the over 50's to deliver takeaways

[Over-50s looking for work should
consider delivering takeaways and other
flexible jobs typically occupied by
younger people, the work and
pensions secretary has said.

Mel Stride made the comments during
a visit to the London headquarters
of the food delivery firm Deliveroo,
which has recorded a 62% increase
in riders aged over 50 since 2021.

In an interview with the Times during
the visit, Stride said these flexible jobs
offered “great opportunities” and that
it was “good for people to consider options
they might not have otherwise thought of”.]

When i was a lad, retired people didn't have the capability to work past retiral age. I think its good that they can, but they shouldn't be in a position that they have to, to make ends meet

I don't see why this has been made out to be such an outrageous suggestion. Lots of older people work part time in shops or pubs which are so why not as delivery drivers?

They sound like over 50s cant get work, or cant do the work of a younger person. How bloody patronising.

I'm 53, and since moving back from london I've done 2 very physical jobs and have just yesterday got my 3rd job in a year. One where I actually get to chill out and relax.

Places round here cant get youngsters to work.

[‘I’m 57, I’m just shattered’:
The reality of being a Deliveroo rider over 50

Chris says the long hours, lack of a pension or
holiday pay and occasional violence from
the public impacts his mental health]

[The work and pensions secretary Mel Stride
caused controversy on Thursday by suggesting
over-50s should take up food delivery work,
after Deliveroo recorded a 62% increase
in couriers over 50 since 2021.

Stride, on a visit to the firm’s
London headquarters, said flexible jobs offered
“great opportunities” and that it was
“good for people to consider options they might not
have otherwise thought of”
in an interview with the Times.

After the controversy – which saw the TUC
accuse Stride of “glorifying the gig economy” – the
Guardian spoke to Chris, a 57-year-old courier
based in London.

“I started riding for Deliveroo in 2019 after
a contract ended. I’m just constantly tired.
Mel Stride made it sound like you can just
log on and find an order, but there’s so much
waiting around that you don’t get paid for.
Often I’m waiting on my bike an hour for an order.
I’ll be sitting there next to 17 other riders.
It’s like a waiter or waitress only being paid when
they deliver food to the table,” he said.]

[“My mum’s 82 and doesn’t live in London.
I don’t get to visit her enough because even
missing one day of work hits my income.
Yesterday I made Ł15.75 in three hours
at lunchtime.
I don’t earn enough for the
hours I work. I live in social housing and
my rent is Ł150 a week.
Currently I’m behind on that and my council tax.
I know that Marks & Spencer puts reduced stickers on
food at 5.30pm
and Co-op at
6.30pm so I try to go then.
It’s just a constant struggle.]

Maybe at 57
it is too much to do.

I think the bigger problem is that over 50s shouldn’t have to be looking for work still, they should be either coming to or enjoying their retirement.
