Women’s Aid has criticised Celebrity Big Brother’s decision to include Kate Middleton’s uncle Gary Goldsmith as a contestant on the show.
In 2017, Goldsmith was fined and given a community order after admitting he had assaulted his wife in a drunken argument in which she accused him of taking drugs.

It comes as the businessman and podcast host is set to be put up for the public vote by fellow housemate Sharon Osbourne in Wednesday’s episode of the ITV1 series.

The national charity, working to end domestic abuse against women and children, said the inclusion of men who have been convicted of abuse in an entertainment setting is a sign to survivors that such crimes “are not taken seriously”.
A spokesperson for the charity said: “The decision to include a man who has been charged, and pleaded guilty to, assaulting his wife, in the Celebrity Big Brother house demonstrates the lack of awareness that the production team has when it comes to survivors of domestic abuse.

“The producers should consider how Gary Goldsmith’s appearance will impact women who have survived domestic abuse and how they will feel watching him on TV every night.
“At Women’s Aid we would urge the producers to consider how they approach this, as for many survivors of abuse, the inclusion of men convicted of abuse in entertainment programmes will already be a sign that these crimes are not taken seriously – the entertainment industry has to consider the impact on women of who they give a platform to and derive entertainment value from.”

A Big Brother spokesperson said: “All housemates undertake training in language and behaviour before entering the Big Brother house.
“All behaviour in the house is strictly monitored at all times.”

An apology provided by the broadcaster on his behalf said: “I’m not perfect and I made a mistake, a personal row seven years ago which was publicly exposed that I’ve worked endlessly for seven years to put right. The offence is long since spent however my regret continues.”

…I think that’s the thing really….if Gary was genuinely sorry for his violence…?…then there are other ways…ways he could have shown that over 7 years and working with such a charity as Woman’s Aid…/…possibly hearing victim impact stories…?…so that what we were seeing now is Women’s Aid speaking out for him and how they feel he deserves this opportunity….but what we’ve heard from him is nothing of what he’s apparently ‘worked endlessly for 7 years to put right’….we’ve heard that he’s the black sheep and that he’s not keen on Harry and Meghan and all of that jazz…going into Celebrity BB under the guise of, I’ll tell all of Meghan and Harry is not the way to address his violent abuse and the moving on of… and he wasn’t convincing Sharon …who directly said, why don’t I believe you when you in saying that you’re not looking for celebrity and a personal gain only…why didn’t she believe him…?…because CBB is not the where people go to amend their pasts in any way….as in your link, it’s addressing his actions on the person and people whose lives it impacted…

I wasn't aware of Jim's background, but I really liked him in CBB.

…apparently Gary’s wife slapped him during an argument and he then punched her…she fell and hit her head on the pavement and was unconscious for several seconds…there was also at the time (…apparently…)…a News of the World ‘sting’ and Gary was recorded as offering to sell ‘cocaine and prostitutes’ to News of the World reporters or a reporter….so far as now and the present etc go…and so far as opinions in his entertainment value and any other contributory etc to the BB house go….its really up to everyone individually to decide what their feelings are about him….this is obviously why he was signed, to create this controversial/divided public opinion…
