[Once the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network)
network is switched off in 2025 you will no longer be able to make phone calls via landline with no internet connection.] 28 Sept 2022 VirginMedia & BT is now closing many Copper phone lines and giving an adapter via the internet to get the Landline working This is going to be a danger to some old folk who only have a Landline and no internet Landline phone works in a power cut. That will be lost As a Power Cuts Stop, the Internet Last edited by arista; 08-03-2023 at 11:17 AM. |

It's outdated tech, my landline doesn't work "directly" since I last switched provider, you have to plug a phone into the router. Although, I don't bother, as I don't use landline calls at all.
In terms of powercuts... you can still make calls via a mobile phone in a power cut. If it's wider scale you sometimes lose 3/4/5g but usually not calls and texts. As for the "not everyone has a mobile" argument ... ... ![]() |

I remember my mum (who couldn't even use a computer) switching from BT to TalkTalk because it was cheaper, must have been a good 15 years ago, and as part of their most basic package (cheaper then just BT line rental) it included a router with 4mb broadband/wireless. She never used it once but it was handy when visiting ![]() |

I'll only use the mobile. And of course making calls from mobiles is so much cheaper now. My mobile phone bill per month is just £6.00 per month, unlimited calls and texts. ![]() |

most people in the uk have given up their copper land lines. BT is the only consumer telecoms company that still supports copper. There is no equipment at telephone exchanges to support copper any more. Copper wire for communications is technology from 60 years ago

He has a Computer with a Virgin Router So it would be easy for USA Owned Virgin Media to send a Email. His Virgin Media Phone line has been dead for 4 days So TS should the regional manager get sacked? Last edited by arista; 08-03-2023 at 03:57 PM. |

We should be shifting away from copper to full fibre ASAP but to be honest, I think if they can solve latency issues we're not all that far off going completely cable-free for domestic internet use.

Yes I assume
that USA owned Virgin Media are saving money. Using the old wired small Virgin box on his wall with a new wire to his Router Hub and his 3 Phones plugged into an adapter hanging out the top of his hub. Problem for that, USA owned Virgin Media is a Virgin engineer has to go into so many homes to wire it all up |
