I think it was pop idol, and he might have come third, I'm not sure

He then has a short pop career, I think maybe 1 hit and so-so album sales. He hasn't really been in the public eye for the last two years I think.

1 Number One Hit, 4 other top 10's, and one Platinum album. Then after his second album flopped he went into acting and done a few West End shows, then a couple of years ago he done Popstar to Operastar and won that, and since that he has been working on a third album which will restore him to the top spot
