Scientists have spotted repeated blasts of radio signals coming from deep in space.

The breakthrough is only the second time scientists have seen such a repeating radio burst. It both deepens the mystery and offers a potential opportunity to finally understand what might be throwing out the burst from a galaxy billions of light years away.

Fast radio bursts have been speculated to be the result of everything from exploding stars to transmissions from aliens. But they have remained entirely mysterious, with little evidence at all of where they might be coming from.

Probably most exciting of the new bursts is one that scientists saw repeat six times, apparently from the same location. Of the more than 60 fast radio bursts detected so far, only one of them has ever repeated.

“Until now, there was only one known repeating FRB. Knowing that there is another suggests that there could be more out there. And with more repeaters and more sources available for study, we may be able to understand these cosmic puzzles—where they’re from and what causes them,” said Ingrid Stairs, a member of the CHIME team and an astrophysicist at UBC.

Seeing two repeating signals probably means that there exists – and that humanity will probably find – a "substantial population" of repeating signals, the researchers write in one of the two papers published in Nature.

If they were from an extra terrestrial source, wouldn't the radio waves be a quite old? For all we know it could be an alien world learning how to broadcast using radio waves from thousands of years ago, lol.

if you watch my short video i posted today about the size of the universe its almost impossible to reason there isnt however we are so far away that we will probably never know before the sun explodes

My current theory is that there's loads of life out there and maybe some of it is even in contact with each other... but we're tucked away several million lightyears from any other intelligent life AND faster-than-light travel is physically impossible no matter how advanced we become (i.e. warp / wormhole travel isn't a real possibility).

Therefore, no matter how long human life persists, it's unrealistic that we'll EVER encounter other life, even though there are almost certainly countless other planets out there with similar conditions to Earth / similar types of life living on them.

What MAY happen, if we don't wipe ourselves out, is advances in terraforming or even the creation of artificial "planets" and then colonisation of space will take place and, again if we manage not to wipe ourselves out, human life on each colony might start to diverge down slightly different evolutionary paths... and then in a few million years, there might be "aliens" in contact with each other, but actually all of them will be descended from humans. Or maybe other earth life. Maybe there'll be intelligent dog people or something . Which might seem ridiculous but... humans are great apes, and a few million years ago, the idea of a great ape more intelligent than a chimpanzee would also have seemed ridiculous (if anyone was observing).

There is of course always the possibility that intelligent life has already found us, took a peek, watched us for a few years, and then used their advanced technology to Trump Wall our section of the galaxy off from the rest of the universe .

"Do we want them to join the intergalactic community?"

"OK... give them a couple of dozen solar systems to explore and leave them alone I guess."

Then they set up some sort of massive energy bubble around us that filters out all signs of life from outside, and we can never pass.
