Think I mentioned this on another similar thread; the worst part of the Momo thing is that it isn't some internet psycho / small group of people that do this, there isn't just "one Momo account", it's usually other kids that the kid being targetted knows. someone will set up a number and use the Momo name and picture and use it to harass or bully other kids into doing things.

Usually it's just stupid dares that aren't really malicious or dangerous but sometimes it ends horribly either by accident (kids daring each other to do really dangerous ****) or on purpose with threats / deliberately causing harm.

It's not a big thing at all and most people didn't know about it until all of the fear mongering on Facebook and tabloid news. People should have nothing to worry about if they supervise their kids.

You cant supervise them 24/7 though, I don't think anyone would dare to claim they do...

Yeah I thought the same until I aked my 9 year old if she knew about Momo, and she was like "AAAHHH why did you have to remind me about Momo just before bed time??"

She's heard of it, all of her friends have heard of it and talk about it, and I also saw an old friend of mine (who lives on the other side of the country) saying similar. He had never heard about it until the recent media stuff, asked his 10 year old, and she said "Yeah everyone knows about Momo".

Sooo... I wouldn't assume that just because most ADULTS didn't know anything about it, that most kids didn't. They seem to have their own little grapevine and have been talking about Momo for quite a while.

It's random... but the report mentions a three year old.

My son said exactly the same thing. He has parental controls on his tablet and no access to social media but knew ALL about Momo.

I must ask my son if he knows about it, he's 14 though, is it more a younger kids thing?

I'd like to ban Internet from anyone under 16.... except for educational use, in school, monitored.

Anyone can make it so that their kids only have internet access while supervised. I'm not saying every move they make has to be watched, but in situations where they're vulnerable, such as using the internet I think it's reasonable.

My nephew is the same age as your son and said that it's not as widespread as people are making it sound and that kids his age know not to take it seriously. Seems to be blown out of proportion a bit.

14 is massively different to 8 or 9 though in how they understand the dangers and what is real and not.

Its a big problem when young kids are being freaked out by it....even if its only a couple its a problem when kids are being told to hurt themselves or others

But the thing pops up wether they are being watched or not...stuff like that can psychologically harm a child for some time...

Lucky you and niahms 14 yr olds seem savvy, but not all are, lots are already in a bad place without this urging them to do what they may have been thinking about doing already...q

I think this is somewhat naive; kids have phones (you cannot control whether other kids have them), kids take their phones to school (even if they're not technically supposed to) and with the best will in the world - unless you home-school, and never let your kids go to another kids house - you can't control what they will and won't see. It's a mistake to think that you can... it'll just mean that they see it anyway but you don't know about it .

It's better to raise kids in the real world, just a guided version of it, so that they're comfortable and confident in telling you about the things they encounter in the world so that you can give them context and guidance on how to be safe. Once they start hiding things from you because they "know they'll get in trouble" - you're screwed.

How does it work?

The momo pops up and threatens that bad things will happen if they don't do what it says?
