I never took that phrase to be 100% accurate, more like it's a very old "profession" Kind of like "it's the best thing since sliced bread" granted bread is a pretty good thing but is it actually the best thing?

Maybe they used other goods as money before money. Tools, clothing, food, cattle, transportation animals etc. other neat things. With a shiny thingy (jewels), you get the "Girlfriend experience".

Well, maybe. On porn films/scenes it's usually used as an alternative "payment" for a work or service because the girl (18+) or woman "does not have" any money.
