I was thinking the same. I watched a whole thing on how obesity exacerbates Covid and how the government has a new strategy.

There is (apparently) a "covid age calculator" going around that tells you your "covid age" and thus your risk. Being overweight adds 5 years to your "age" (obese 10 years). Other things like underlying health conditions "add years" too. Although, being female apparently takes 8 years OFF so that's nice for you lot . It means my Covid age as a bog standard male is 35 but my wife (who is 33) gets 8 years taken off and is only Covid age 25! Thnaks a lot Covid, now I'm a cradle-robber.

...I can't help but feel that it's akin to an "elf name generator" at christmas though and not actual science. There are actual workplaces using it to assess risk level though, even in healthcare .

Apparently anyone under "covid age 45" is very low risk of complications. But even a 30 year old who, let's say, is male, obese, and has both diabetes and asthma could easily be bumped up to 50+ and be low/moderate risk. And a 55 year old who would be moderate risk could be pushed right into the 70+ bracket and thus at high risk.

It makes SOME sort of sense. I guess.

All I know is that we have an obesity problem in this country, and it has nothing to do with Covid. And we're encouraging people to eat junk food by halving the cost.

To be fair it does seem odd to be making already-cheap junk food cheaper at the same time as trying to tackle obesity. Honestly, 50% off things like KFC and McDonalds actually means that in August it will be CHEAPER to go to the drive-through for a family of 4 than to make a decent home cooked meal, which really is mad. Out for dinner to save money .

That said, the junk food aspect is being focussed on quite heavily, it's really a bit of a technicality. Places like normal restaurants and little cafés etc. can also benefit (the little boutique cafe where I live is signed up, for example) ... but they can't really exclude fast food places. They are technically still restaurants.

The government is putting in place an anti-obesity plan, while halving the price of junk food. Seems a bit stupid to me.
