If someone hits you or if you feel threatened,then of course the nature reaction is to put your hands up ,so yeah I'm perplexed at Chris Rock's posture. It's possible he just wanted to let Will Smith get his anger out,but still it's odd that his hands looked tied behind his back . Even if you don't fight back you still try to guard yourself.

This is an extreme example but even when someone gets beaten with a weapon, their natural instinct is to protect their head & face with their hands. It might not do you any good... and just get you more battered & bruised with broken hands,but that's still your first reaction .

He knew some confrontation was about to happen though, can hear Rock saying " oh no " as Smith approaches. But the slap happened fairly quickly.

The reaction of his hands is really slow though. And the leaning forward and gritted teeth from the still shots pre slap make it look suspiciously set-up. But like I say, I keep changing my mind whether it was or not.

The thing that makes me think it was a set up was Chris Rock leaning slightly forward and the way his hands stay behind his back. Normally it's instinct to protect yourself with your hands when someone is coming at you like that.

I don't think he really thought Will was going to hit him though, he looked really confused about what was going on which would make total sense if he didn't know about her medical condition because in that case the joke was really mild
