When did that rule come into the game that you've got to be behind two players to be onside?

In the rules of the game of football, Robertson was clearly playing Benzema onside.

I played in defence all my playing days and never knew that was the rule. That's the first time I've ever seen that.

The ball came to Benzema off the Liverpool player anyway, so the goal should have stood.

I just assumed the rule was that you've got to be behind the last defender, I never knew the keeper came into it.
