A great shame. Admittedly, I haven't watched all that much of her work beyond The Shining, but that movie is one of my absolute favourites and I can't imagine anyone else in that role. She's such an integral part of what makes it so great and gives one of the all time great horror movie performances imo. R.I.P. It's a shame her later years especially were so strenuous on her mental health.

Aw, RIP.
She was great in The Shining - although it very nearly broke her filming it.

Yeah i've read about that, puts me off watching the film back nowadays. I know Stephen King hated the director too and wasn't a fan of the film.

I haven't read the book but I know his issue was how Kubrick interrupted the story, the book being more supernatural/horror and the film being more mind-of-a-psychopath. I think I might download the book actually just to see the difference. Have you watched the sequel to it- Doctor Sleep? I think that must have taken a more Stephen Kind approach, I really liked it actually

There was a miniseries made of the book, either directed by or scripted by Stephen King. It's... not as good as Kubrick's

….awwwwww, I didn’t know that she had ill health, that’s very sad news…as others have said, I’m not sure that I could ever watch The Shining again, knowing what Shelley Duvall went through with Stanley Kubrick…she was also a great Olive Oyl to Robin Williams’ Popeye…I’m not sure how well that movie did at the box office but I thought that it was quite…and a great pairing of the lead actors…
…Shelley Duvall… ![]() |

Kubrick also kept bullying other actors on set, they had to rehearse the same scene 100 times....to the point where they were in tears , Scatman Crothers kept pleading Kubrick to stop making him do the same scene over and over again. I mean we all know directors will make actors do the same Scene alot for perfection etc ,but Kubrick seemed to get pleasure out of torturing his actors , especially when they were tired and pushed to their limit. Very sad news indeed about Shelley's death R.IP. ,I only ever knew her from ' The Shining '......which unfortunately has a bad taste to it now .....due to the zero compassion and awful treatment behind the scenes. Btw, in response to Niamh, it's worth pointing out that The Shining isn't psychological horror per se, given that the ghosts in the movie are shown to be real at the climax of the film. It's more of a bait-and-switch where Kubrick tries to suggest to the viewer that it's all probably in Jack's head, before pulling the rug out from under the audience and having Grady's ghost let Jack out of the pantry. But it's true to say that Kubrick's movie is markedly different from the book in terms of the characterisations of the main players, the motivation of the ghosts, certain plot progressions, etc. It's commonly accepted that Kubrick just wanted to use the basic framework of the novel to tell his own story and insert his own themes. Also, not that it makes it okay, but I'm pretty sure I remember reading somewhere that Duvall said she wouldn't have changed her experience making The Shining for the world. That's just how dedicated some actors are to their craft. ![]()

I think she was kind of unconventionally beautiful in her prime.

She was great on The Shining. Love that movie. Kubrick wasn't exactly faithful to the book, but I think it's a fantastic movie anyway.

She’s in a few of my favourite moves - The Shining, Annie Hall, Nashville and Popeye (loved it since I was a kid). She had such a unique look and played such quirky characters. She was so, so perfect as Olive Oyl.
RIP Shelley. ![]() Last edited by LaLaLand; 12-07-2024 at 04:15 AM. |
