This was normal when I was growing up. Kids don't get to be independent until they are almost adults now and by that point it's already too late... some have anxiety attacks just answering the door because parents never let them. We've gone backwards

Wtf, that's ridiculous. Would she be arrested for allowing him to go out and play with a friend too?
When I was 10 I was allowed to walk to the corner shop which was about three minutes away. All the things going on in the hell hole that is America and THIS is what they are concerned about? |

back when i was a kid, nobody worried about it not being safe, there just weren't the threats to safety that there are now. That's progress i guess

We had another parent (online, of course) dishing out some very heavy judgement on a parenting forum for mentioning that our then-9-year-old was allowed to go to the park with her friends (literally less than 100m from our house). This persons 12 year old, she informed us, had never been further than their back garden alone. But yes lack of freedom and responsibility has a quite catastrophic effect on adolescent psychology, unfortunately. It's a basic building block of normal development. This Law needs to be made public in
that State in America. That Mother did not know that letting her son, then aged 10, could not walk alone to the shop. |

They were very different times though. For example, there were a lot more woman at home, they were always lets say "interested" in what kids were up to, so if something appeared unusual, they would know about it. That sort of "support" network just doesn't exist today |

I let James go to the shop at 10. I leave him in the house alone for short periods of time too..

‘ Officers told Patterson they would drop the reckless conduct charge if she signed a form outlining a safety plan and promising her kids would be closely watched, NBC News reports.’
…I guess that it would depend on the child really, as well…for that age child, most UK schools would have agreed and signed that safety plan with the parents also signing, obviously…but this child was home schooled so no plan for their safety had been actioned…(…and they were walking by the side of a highway, I believe…)…for me, it’s one of those things of having to have a more complete story, I think…I would say that as the child(fren) ard home schooled that maybe the police and parent(s)….would draw up a safety plan for them for the future… |
