A new four-lane highway cutting through tens of thousands of acres of protected Amazon rainforest is being built for the COP30 climate summit in the Brazilian city of Belém.
It aims to ease traffic to the city, which will host more than 50,000 people - including world leaders - at the conference in November. The state government touts the highway's "sustainable" credentials, but some locals and conservationists are outraged at the environmental impact. The Amazon plays a vital role in absorbing carbon for the world and providing biodiversity, and many say this deforestation contradicts the very purpose of a climate summit. Along the partially built road, lush rainforest towers on either side - a reminder of what was once there. Logs are piled high in the cleared land which stretches more than 13km (8 miles) through the rainforest into Belém. Diggers and machines carve through the forest floor, paving over wetland to surface the road which will cut through a protected area. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c9vy191rgn1o -------------------------- Thats how you do it |

We need Greta Thunberg on the case.
It's the one area where she's actually effective.

Just a bunch of elites pretending to care and coming up with ways to make poor people pay more for things.

…hmmmmm, this does appear to be quite ludicrous in so many ways but I’m going to hold off my thoughts atm because I believe this is a roadway that has been a contention for a long time …so much as the forests have to be preserved, the area needs access for employment and growth so it’s a bit of a catch 22/type thing…and the limited road access there is has been struggling for a long time…anyway, just skimming through that one article that you linked, bots…?…the resident commenting is saying ‘His community won't be connected to the road, given its walls on either side.
"For us who live on the side of the highway, there will be no benefits. There will be benefits for the trucks that will pass through. If someone gets sick, and needs to go to the centre of Belém, we won't be able to use it." …so it really feels absolutely essential that it’s essential that the road does indeed provide the employment access to him and other residents like him because that’s surely the whole reasoning for it… |

Gosh, think of all the good done to the environment if they didn't destroy thousands of acres of rainforest, and then jet-set from around the world to further pollute with the bullshyt with which they come out.
I know I've said this many a time, but they could save a much bigger carbon footprint by not attended those ridiculous circle-jerks, than any of the performative ideas they think up.
