It was written by Prince for The Family iirc.

Another interesting thing I know in relation to that song is that Prince once got into a physical confrontation with Sinead O'Connor over the bad language she'd use when performing the song live.

the way it used to work was that record companies employed songwriters and then offered the songs to the performers in their stable. Artists were known to release the same song within weeks of each other, and no-one cared

The Red Hot Chili Peppers song "I Could Have Lied" was written by Anthony Kiedis about Sinead O'Connor, he claims he had a relationship with her and she dumped him, Sinead always denied this and said she never had a romantic relationship with him at all
