that didn't involve some sort of benefit to themselves?
Come on folks - any examples of the Americans ever acting altruistically on our behalf (or for that matter on any country's behalf)? I can't think of any, and unfortunately Stephen didn't elaborate. ![]() |

Why bring racism into what is a political argument? Stephen brought the subject up - and I can honestly not think of a single event where they have done anything for Britain (or any other country for that matter) that didn't have a hefty amount of self interest involved. If there are any Americans on this forum perhaps they would enlighten me since they are very fond of throwing out this old chestnut with nothing to back it up. |

After WW2 they lent Britain a lot of money, as I understand it.
But they certainly took their time in getting involved in both WW1 and WW2, so I'm guessing they money the lent us was 'guilt money' to some extent! |

Well, Winston was praying and begging for them to join in the War, and when they did all his prayers were answered.

In contrast, these days, if the US says to the UK "Go to war with us" - we do it instantly!

Unfortunately, this is the truth and the blame lies firmly and squarely at Blair's door. He even had the audacity to admit recently that he lied about the WMD in order to get backing to go to war.

WW2
After WW2 Britain would of gone bankrupt if America had not bailed us out with a massive loan, Massive interest was charged so not entirely Altruistic. I'm struggling to add to the list but History has never been a strong point of mine

On the other hand, Germany's economic woes under the Weimar Republic and, by extension, the rise of the Hitler's government and WW2 was triggered by the boom and bust economy of the US and the Great Depression.
