Because the water is ice cold so the chances are you'll get hypothermia and die ... its just delaying it a bit

You can laugh at Jack & rose etc but this scene always gets me with the people in bed (dunno if the couple of the mum & kids is worse) ... you just know thats pretty much what was going on when it really happened
