It looks like I'm going to learn (another) new language. Let me explain: I'm filing the application form to have a spot for my final year at University. (International transportation, shipping and air plane logistics degree)
Well, I could have taken Italian (Russian isn't available and English is obviously compulsory) but as I have taken Customs Formalities instead of Italian for the last 2 years, well, I can't take Italian for the final year. So they're asking me to pick a new language but the only ones available are Japanese and Chinese but I don't give a damn about these 2. I'm fine with being (almost) fluent in 4 languages. Anyway, moaning won't get me anywhere and I'm stuck. What's the best ? Japanese or Chinese ? Why would you take if you had the choice, and why ? Thanks guys. ![]()

I would pick Japanese as I have always wanted to learn that but Chinese is more spoken in the world - most spoken language.

Japanese! I've been learning it for a bit, quite easy when you get the hang of it! I've heared that they're both quite similar though.
And you can speak 4 languages fluently? wow!

My cousin is studying Mandarin as part of her degree course and seems to be enjoying it. The writing is a pain in the tits though, but yeah, still very interesting. Plus, it's probably the more logical one to be learning at the moment.

I'd be slightly torn. Japanese would come in very handy for travelling there (and I'd far rather travel to Japan than that police state China... not ot mention Japanese food is much better) and playing imported video games, but Mandarin Chinese is far more widely spoken and I find it more pleasing to the ear than the weird staccato of Japanese.
If pushed, I'd say Japanese.

It depends with Industry you go for
Although much is made in China orders and Offices are in Japan. Electronics. Also China is not like Japan you can trade with Japan but China can be harder unless you have a connection. |

Go for both..... or really go for Chinese. Like Harry said.. it is the most spoken language in the world so you would get more career opportunities through it!! But a man of your knowledge in linguistics Captain Remy.. you should try and do both!! One language this year and one the following year?
Or you could just go for Jap? Either way just follow your heart! ![]() |

R & D is Japan and UK and USA
China is bland Factory that makes what Japan tells them if China lets Japan down in Quality Japan then contacts South Korea and Veitnam who can also under cut China. |

![]() I think I will go with Chinese. I mean, the shipping industry is so focussed on Asia right now, it's insane. I'm a bit worried tho. I mean, I haven't properly learned a new language in ages but I think I'll be okay, these things tend to go natural for me. Thanks guys. ![]() edit: oh wait, Japan is in Asia too so I'm still stuck lmao

Chinese.
I am Japanese I should say Japanese but definitely Chinese is the future language. If you are only interested in culture, you could choose Japanese, but China is rapidly becoming influential one in business and industries. Economically Japan has already become has-been country I am afraid. |

You must be aware that HQ remains in Japan. China is a Bland Factory it is not a safe nation like Japan. Japan in the WW2 and before took over much of China. |

Now Japan is entirely dependent on the US for military support and China is a highly militarised economic powerhouse making all of its neighbours s**t themselves. Look at the way Japan and South Korea didn't take any action when their citizens were being kidnapped by North Korean spies, for fear of upsetting China.
