Japan in the WW2 and before took over much of China.

China was a desperately poor, weak country in the midst of a civil war when the Japanese invaded.

Now Japan is entirely dependent on the US for military support and China is a highly militarised economic powerhouse making all of its neighbours s**t themselves. Look at the way Japan and South Korea didn't take any action when their citizens were being kidnapped by North Korean spies, for fear of upsetting China.
