That american commando is an ex green beret.

His name was Mike Pierce,he is 45 years old. He served several years as an enlisted man in the Green Berets, then obtained a commission, and some easy duties, including movie advisors etc, he first changed his first name spelling to Myke then later changed his surname to Hawke. He ended his service as a regular about 10 years ago.



He is still a commissioned officer in the Reserve Forces or was till about 3 years ago, about 6 years ago, he commanded a special forces fort in Afghanistan. He now runs a company that offer motivational leadership courses and corporate adventures with his wife. (that is his wife runs it too not the adventure is with his wife)

Yeah R Lee Ermey was an ex US marine NCO, he was at one time the most decorated drill instructor in the US Marine Corps. He actually was an advisor on Full Metal Jacket but convinced Kubrick that he was the ideal man for the role, so much so Kubrick let him write his own dialogue.
