Unhappy Problems with my desktop

Since Wednesday my desktop has been undergoing Blue Screen of Death using Firefox

I have tried uninstalling DivX which we thought may have caused a problem and when that did not work I tried a system restore to 31 August

That has not worked

I seem to get BSOD using firefox

For the time being I have switched to Chrome, but am not sure if the problem will surface there.

This is a time when I realise I am not really that much of a computer expert.

This situation may impact on my contributions here

Do a system restore.

If that doesn't work try reinstalling firefox.

The exact same thing happened to me. I switched to Chrome too and everything has been fine. It's a better browser too.

You got BSOD as well?

SoBig I have done exactly what you suggested and that has not worked.

If it were not for having a fridge delivered tomorrow between 12 and 6, I would be heading off to the new PC World / Techguys in Northumberland Street tomorrow to see if a service I have been paying for since I bought it will deliver

irql not less or equal rings a bell ive been down that road now im not sure why firefox would be triggering it but with me it turned out to be a video driver issue.
maybe reinstalling your graphics card driver will fix it or look for a newer driver for it.

Check the event viewer to see if theres any error messages, it might give you an idea of whats causing the bsod.

What version of windows do you use? If its XP make sure you have updated it to SP3, otherwise the latest firefox wont work properly.

What version of firefox?

When was the last time you cleaned and sorted out your registry.

On Tuesday/Wednesday what did you update/upgrade, install or uninstall?

An IRQL not less or equal problem is normally caused by device criver errors, BIOS probs or incorrect/incomplete upgrades. It often happens when people only occasionally upgrade windows XP consequently they do it piecemeal, often missing out vital updates etc.

Auto update windows, via the MS website and in future leave autoupdate ON, if it still shows it may sometimes with older computers (Intel 386s etc) be necessary to reinstall windows then directly update it to sp3 via the MS website.

After updating windows reinstall devices then go for the latest versions of browsers , antivirus etc.

This bit gets scary especially when people talk about BIOS and reinstalling Windows and video cards.

Probably not to do with Firefox, maybe a bad driver or something to do with anti-virus or firewall.

Get this program. It will give you a good idea which driver is causing the crash -

http://majorgeeks.com/BlueScreenView_d6200.html

You need to setup Windows to save debugging info. Right click My Computer, choose properties. Then advanced, then choose startup and recovery 'settings.' Think you need to select 'small memory dump' or 'kernel memory dump' if not already selected.

How long has the machine been with you?

It was a metal pan of water in the icebox and manually removing ice as it loosened

Pity none of your science based forum mates are decorators, they might have a hot air gun you could borrow.
