Default Mary Jane cast in the new Spiderman film?

Quote:
Face it, Tiger. You just hit the jackpot.

According to Deadline, Sony Pictures has selected their Zombieland and Easy A star Emma Stone to portray Peter Parker's (future) love interest Mary Jane Watson in their next Spider-Man film. The site claims the studio will "imminently offer" Stone the role, one of two female leads in the film.

The second female lead is Gwen Stacy, with Dianna Agron (Glee), Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland), Georgina Haig (Wasted on the Young) and Dominique McElligott (Moon) said to be the finalists for that role.

The site says Gwen is a "plum part for the first installment of the 3D Marc Webb-directed reboot of Spider-Man, because she is the first love interest of the high school-aged Peter Parker, played by Andrew Garfield. Mary Jane -- played by Kirsten Dunst in the Sam Raimi-directed trilogy -- becomes more pivotal in the later installments of the Spidey saga."

Filming begins later this year for a July 3, 2012 release.
Good choice, I liked her in Zombieland. Here's a picture of her for people who've never seen her.

the Gwen Stacy bit is interesting as (massive potential spoilers ahead)

Spoiler:

She was killed off in the comics by Green Goblin. Remember that scene in the first film where he throws MJ and the bus off the bridge? Well it was similar to that but ended badly. It'll be interesting if they do kill her off as it'll make it pretty much darker then any spiderman film before.

Tobey Maguire won't play Spider-man? According to wiki this nerdy looking dude will play him.

I really liked the actress who played Gwen Stacy in Spiderman 3, can't remember her name.

Bryce Dallas Howard. I like the actress but her part in Spiderman 3 was kinda pointless.

Yeah it's a reboot, new cast & crew. Which is a good thing after the trainwreck that was Spiderman 3. Toby Maguire was always a terrible Spiderman anyway.

Awesome, I love her. Also loved the Garfield bloke in Red Riding, so am looking forward to the next installment.

I'm glad Toby Maguire isn't going to be Spiderman, I really didn't like him as him at all.

Oh okay. I guess they needed to do that anyway since Toby is getting up there in age. You can't have someone that's going to be 40 by time the 5th movie comes out playing Spiderman.

She's a brilliant young actress - very good choice. She first got my attention in Paper Man and of course Zombie Land. I've heard good things about Easy A too.

Emma Stone has been cast as the female lead in the upcoming Spider-Man film from Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios, it was announced today by Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment and Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures. Stone has been tapped for the role of Gwen Stacy opposite Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker. News of Stone's casting initially broke over the weekend, but it had been widely presumed that she was playing Mary Jane Watson, not Gwen. It should be noted that Stone is actually not a natural redhead, but a blond. So it looks like she'll be going back to her (literal) roots for Spidey.

The film, to be directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt and produced by Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, will begin production in December and will be released in theaters nationwide in 3D on July 3, 2012.

The casting continues an association between Sony Pictures Entertainment and the actress, who previously starred in Superbad, The House Bunny, and Zombieland, all for Columbia Pictures; she may currently be seen in Screen Gems' hit comedy Easy A, and takes a cameo role in Screen Gems' upcoming Friends with Benefits.

Commenting on the announcement, Tolmach said, "It's been an incredible journey for us to watch Emma's star rise as an actress. She is extraordinarily talented and has a very special on-screen spark that is perfect for this role. Given her history with the studio, casting her in one of our most important franchises is a real thrill."

Webb added, "The chemistry between Andrew and Emma was stunning and made Emma the clear choice. At the heart of the story of Peter Parker is not only the amazing Spider-Man, but also an ordinary teenager who is wondering what he has to do to get the girl. Andrew and Emma will bring everything audiences expect to these roles, but also make them their own. Much to my surprise, it was fun to find out that our choice for Gwen (Emma) is also a natural blonde."

Emma Stone can currently be seen starring in Screen Gems' hit comedy Easy A. Next year, she will star in Warner Bros.' Crazy, Stupid, Love opposite Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling and in The Help, the adaptation of Kathryn Stockett's bestselling novel; she also takes a cameo role in Screen Gems' Friends with Benefits and will voice a role in DreamWorks Animation's comedy The Croods. Stone's recent credits include Paperman, Zombieland, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, The House Bunny, The Rocker, and Superbad.
Bit of a twist, It'll be interesting to see who plays MJ then.
