He probably means Australian idol.
Anyway the differences are. 1.The x factor judges decide who go out of a bottom two where as American idol doesnt. 2.The judges on American idol dont mentor there acts where as The x factor judges do. 3.There are 4 categories on The x factor which are Boys,Girls,Groups,Over 25"s/Over 28"s which American idol doesnt have. Thats all i can think of for now.

Australian Idol started in 2003, X Factor originally started a few years back and after a hiatus came back last year though.

Most of the main differences have already been made but I can think of a few that might either put someone off Idol, or maybe they will prefer it:
The contestants can use instruments and most are very talented musically so they can play a variety. The show seems to focus 99% on the contestants and 1% on the judges which is the opposite in the X Factor America has an enormous country and western following (because once you get out of the cities like New York and Miami thats all they listen to) so expect a hell of a lot of that (I don't mind a little bit, but not too much please). The auditions are done in private, which I still like. The host, Ryan Seacrest is very cheesy and a typical American, as is the whole show (ie completely over the top and full of promotions for Ford and Coke) The guest mentors are very good. This year we had GaGa, Cheryl Crow, Miley Cyrus, Usher to name but a few. Jimmy Iovine from Innerscope records is the main show mentor and he is fantastic. He is the man that signed GaGa when everyone else turned her down. He also has always let her do her own thing. |

Idol - judges, don't decide who goes; but can save the eliminated person once every series if they want to (in US anyway)
X Factor - the bottom two are announced, they perform again and then the judges pick who goes home out of those two, if it's a tie, it goes on public vote. |

Eh I prefer X Factor over Idol. I need to add something about the american version. They are allowed to play their own instruments. I think Josh Krajzic played the Piano and Guitar on the show. And Simon criticzed a contestant during Boot Camp. Because he didnt play the song as well because he plays the piano
