Recent reports have revealed that the former Formula 1 world champion Kimi Raikkonen is expected to team up alongside the reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel in the Red Bull Racing team for the 2012 Formula 1 season.
Since Mark Webber is currently on a year-to-year contract with the team, it is believed that he might have to leave the team next year in order to make room for a faster driver in the championship winning team. Red Bull Racing are currently leading the 2011 Formula 1 championship by a margin and since Sebastian Vettel is way ahead of his teammate in terms of points, the team is hoping of finding an equally competitive teammate in order to dominate the season completely. Even though Christian Horner recently stated that he is not willing to manage two world champions in the team in 2012, it seems that Raikkonen is a potential competitor for the spot at the team and Horner admitted that he is one of the best out there. Kimi on the other hand has constantly claimed that he does not want to be a part of Formula 1 anymore but still he has been linked with the sport many times. Even after Robert Kubica’s accident, he was linked with Lotus Renault GP as their potential driver. Nevertheless, Webber has been performing pretty well since the past couple of races and Horner has admitted that negotiation regarding a potential 2012 deal is currently in progress with the Aussie driver. The team was unable to secure a win at this past weekend’s British Grand Prix but since both of its drivers finished on the podium in 2nd and 3rd places, they were pretty happy with the overall result. The best thing about this result was that both of the drivers were pretty much on the same page as Webber finished just inches behind the current championship leader. RBR have not revealed anything officially yet but the team has stated that they are considering their ‘options’ before coming up with a final decision regarding this matter.

Not for the first time talk of Kimi Raikkonen returning to F1 has surfaced but Red Bull have denied he will make a comeback with them.
With Mark Webber yet to sign a new contract and his position at Red Bull under scrutiny after he repeatedly ignored the team's orders during Sunday's British GP, the rumour mill has gone into overdrive regarding who could replace Webber should he leave the team. Former Ferrari man Raikkonen, who has turned out for the Red Bull-sponsored Citroen Rally team, has been consistently linked with a return to F1 since his departure at the end of 2009 so it comes as no surprise that the Finn has been named as a contender for a seat at Red Bull. However, Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has been quick to pour cold water on the idea. "Kimi Raikkonen is and will be an issue for us, this is definite," said Marko. "He will not drive at Red Bull. The rumours are far-fetched and total nonsense." The Austrian added to German news website TZ that when Webber leaves Red Bull his replacement will be one of "our juniors". Marko's assertion means that one of Toro Rosso's Jaime Alguersuari and Sebastien Buemi or former STR test and reserve driver Daniel Ricciardo are the likely candidates to replace Webber.

The Finnish former Formula One World Champion Kimi Räikkönen’s return to the F1 circuit looks certain, at least if the British Williams team boss Adam Parr’s answers and especially his facial expressions are anything to go by.
Parr seemed to find it difficult to keep a straight face when Eddie Jordan, commenting for BBC television, asked him after yesterday’s Indian Grand Prix whether the team’s second driver for next year was going to be Räikkönen or Adrian Sutil. Parr assured Jordan and other listeners that the Williams team was still thinking about what to do next year and that no decisions had been made as yet. His mischievous smile nevertheless strongly suggested that Räikkönen might be seen in a Williams helmet in the 2012 F1 season. Williams is one of the most successful teams in F1 history. It has won the Constructors’ Championship nine times. Finnish driver Keke Rosberg, among others, won his drivers’ title (in 1982) when driving for Williams. This season, however, has been lamentable for Williams. Collectively the team’s pilots Pastor Maldonado and Rubens Barrichello have managed to rustle up only five points. Parr admitted that Räikkönen would be the right person to help to solve Williams’s problems. “Everybody knows that Kimi is one of the most talented drivers who has been involved in Formula One in recent years. From what we can all see, he is very hungry to come back. And I think having a World Champion in your midst of course energises people”, Parr offered. According to Parr, Williams does not need more sponsors to hire a new driver. This strengthens Räikkönen’s position, as his salary expectations are known to be high. “We need to get the best driver line-up for next year”, Parr said in India. Bernie Ecclestone, who owns the commercial rights to the Formula One circus, would also be happy to see Kimi Räikkönen resurface as an F1 pilot. “It would be nice to see him do it”, Ecclestone answered when the Finnish commercial television channel MTV3 asked his opinion with regard to Räikkönen’s return to the sport after a recent spell in the World Rally Championship. “I am not sure if he is serious about it”, Ecclestone continued. In its latest issue, the F1 Racing magazine revealed that Räikkönen has trained hard for the past four months in order to be in top shape for the start of the winter’s tests. For the past two seasons, Räikkönen has driven for Citroën on the WRC circuit.

In the past three years we've seen Kimi Raikkonen move from one form of automobile racing to another, first from Formula One where he accomplished the ultimate goal of becoming World Champion, onto his own privately owned World Rally Championship team.
To keep us all guessing, and perhaps to eliminate the onset of boredom – and as if flying through the trees wasn't challenging enough - Kimi took an interesting detour testing a NASCAR racer in the US, and competed in a race, just to see if he'd like it. Recently the Finn has completed a test with the ultra fast French Peugeot sports car team in Spain, alongside the factory's current drivers. And now, rumours again surface of a return to F1 with the legendary Williams team. That's four different types of vehicles! Normally three years is a lifetime in motor sports but for Kimi, aka 'The Iceman', aka 'The Kimster', they must have been three very quick years indeed. For the legions of Raikkonen fans worldwide what's important is not where he's been lately but where he will be next year. Let's review some of his possibilities for future employment in the world of motor sports... (Note; At this time we'll leave out snowmobile racing as, although it is certainly a motorised sport Kimi Raikkonen has participated in previously, under the name 'James Hunt', it is regarded as unlikely he will enter on a full time basis!) First, let's look at perhaps the most likely place Kimi will be using his considerable talents next year, and that is, dare I say, Formula One. Currently on the F1 grid there are several teams which at this late date remain unsettled as to their driving assignments for next year. These teams are; Lotus Renault, Force India, Toro Rosso, Williams, and the newer teams such as HRT, and Virgin. All in all quite a selection of teams showing varying potential short term. Using the process of elimination, since after all, he is a former World Champion, it is probably safe to say his management team will be entertaining offers from the better financed, and performing organisations. As we near the end of the Formula One season you can assume much of the remaining interest within the sport will focus on just which teams pursue Raikkonen more forcefully than the others. In the other racing series which Kimi has expressed varying degrees of interest the World Rally Championship probably holds the greatest affinity for him, simply because so many of his Finish countrymen compete there. NASCAR, which his friend and former McLaren team-mate, Juan Pablo Montoya now calls home is a more relaxed, and competitor friendly environment than F1, or so say the drivers themselves. And lastly, Sports Cars are returning to their former glory with the competition between Peugeot and Audi, with the promise of more manufacturers to join. Who wouldn't want to run at Le Mans? It has been a very interesting past three years for the man from Finland. Wherever he choses, I for one, will be happy to see Kimi Raikkonen in any race car.

Raikkonen, still hugely popular with F1 fans despite leaving the sport for rallying at the end of 2009, told the latest edition of F1 Racing magazine that anything was possible but nothing had been decided.
"There are many different options and of course a lot of speculation," he said. "Until something is certain, there is no point in speculating because it could go any way. To be honest, I don't know myself yet." ![]()

Luca di Montezemolo has revealed he is happy to hear speculation about Kimi Raikkonen's possible return to Formula One.
At the end of 2009, despite the Finn having a year to run on his contract, the Maranello based team replaced Raikkonen with Fernando Alonso in a deal that coincided with the arrival of Santander as a lucrative new sponsor. The 2007 World Champion went off to world rallying and even tried his hand at NASCAR style racing, but is now reportedly on the verge of returning to Formula One next year with the beleaguered Williams team. "That he might be coming back makes me feel good," Ferrari President di Montezemolo told Italy's La Stampa. "Kimi is a very likeable guy even though I have never been able to communicate properly with him," he added. "There are some drivers like him with the flames of speed burning inside them, like Jean Alesi who is going next year to do the Indy 500." Montezemolo also dismissed rumours Ferrari is looking to replace Felipe Massa with Mercedes' Nico Rosberg at the end of the season. "Our drivers are Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa," he insisted.
