Women who enjoy an alcoholic drink in the evening tend to be healthier as they move into old age, research shows.

This nightcap could be a pint of beer, a glass of wine or a single measure of spirit, PLoS Medicine journal reports.

A study of 14,000 women concluded that those who drink in moderation were far more likely to reach 70 in good health than heavier drinkers or abstainers.

Spreading consumption over the week is better than saving it for the weekend, the researchers say.

Women who drank little and often fared better than occasional drinkers.

I always remember hearing that one glass of red wine a day was meant to be good for you - for the heart and blood or something - but think that came from some old alki trying to justify their habits!!! lol

Wasn't Stout a drink that used to be given in hospitals decades ago due to it's nutritional value - can remember my grandparents discussing this....?

Great excuse either way for us auldies to go get plastered !!

Milk stout

Milk stout (also called sweet stout or cream stout) is a stout containing lactose, a sugar derived from milk. Because lactose is unfermentable by beer yeast, it adds sweetness, body, and calories to the finished beer. Milk stout was claimed to be nutritious, and was given to nursing mothers, along with other stouts, such as Guinness. The classic surviving example of milk stout is Mackeson's, for which the original brewers claimed that "each pint contains the energising carbohydrates of 10 ounces of pure dairy milk". In the period just after the Second World War when rationing was in place, the British government required brewers to remove the word "milk" from labels and adverts, and any imagery associated with milk.

Ahhh...so that's where it all came from, I was sure there had been some nutritional reasons for the Stout..!!


Calories - not something I need to worry about thankfully.... if anything I could do with more!! In fact, now I think of it, that's an excellent point Omah... I should stock up on Stout, drink it aplenty, put on a few lbs and get blind drunk into the bargain !!
