Because a knock on the door doesn't quite have the same 'oomph' - and isn't as easy to hear as the very distinctive rattling of the letterbox?

Its funny though, I did imagine you'd have some very nice proper box -American style, was going to put a piccy of one up but didn't want to in case you thought I was being sarky. (which I wasn't !!!)
