Default Tuesdays Moral Dilema

The Partiality of Friendship

Jim has the responsibility of filling a position in his firm. His friend Paul has applied and is qualified, but someone else seems even more qualified. Jim wants to give the job to Paul, but he feels guilty, believing that he ought to be impartial. That's the essence of morality, he initially tells himself. This belief is, however, rejected, as Jim resolves that friendship has a moral importance that permits, and perhaps even requires, partiality in some circumstances. So he gives the job to Paul. Was he right?

I think so. I would have given the job to Paul on the fact that I knew him and that I knew what he was like. If the other candidate is more qualified, I'm sure there are other opportunities. But that's the way I feel as I value friendship importantly.

Oh Gawd, that's tricky...he probably wasn't right, he probably should of picked the other guy...but If I was in his position I'd probably do the same thing and pick my friend 'cos I know I'd feel guilty otherwise and at least I know I'd get on with them

Well the job should go to the person who is better qualified really.

But I would give it to a friend over a stranger. Especially while jobs are so scarce.

..hmmm I think only time will tell. I would have given the job to Paul too but I' know my OH would have chosen the best person for the job..or at least I think he would as he's not emotional about things....
..but then Paul could turn out to be the right person when it didn't look as though he was initially...whereas the other guy may have had better credentials but not be as committed...I think someone has to do the job before you can say for sure thet they are right or wrong for it.....
.....so I would go for Paul and then try to make him 'fit the job'...because otherwise I'd have to face another dilemma of whether to let him go or not..so it would have all been pointless

I would only have given the job to a friend if he was the better qualified for it, if someone else was then I would not give my friend the position.
I would let my friend down as gently as I could and keep him in mind for future openings but also do what I could to help him find a job elsewhere.

Yes but qualifications can sometimes be misleading Joey..the sometime the person who doesn't seem to be the best person on paper actually can turn out to do a better job..and vice versa...
I think that's why I'd give it to Paul..give him the opportunity to prove himself...

OT..I was going to post in JF's dilemma thread about the parents..but it was closed...lol

I totally agree,I am sure in that scenario I would weigh up all options but the success of the position may be vital to the Company and I would be doing myself and indeed my friend no favours if he wasn't the right person for the job.
My heart would want to give him the job definately. My head rules me a lot of the time though.

I also was going to post in JFs parents thread but it was closed as you say.It was bit of a heavy one but one massive dilemma none-the-less.
