Default Great housemate or just the underdog?

Some food for thought here:

When you look at a good portion of housemates who either won the series or are very popular, they have a tendency to be on the outs with a lot of their fellow housemates. For example:

Deana [BB13] - Nothing else really needs to be said here. Unpopular inside the house, ridiculously popular outside.
Aaron [BB12] - I didn't watch this series, but looking at how many nominations he received I can only assume he wasn't everyones best friend.
Freddie [BB10] - Again, another outsider who was extremely popular (at least on the forums) Only evicted when up against another outsider.
Sophie [BB10] - Whilst Siavash probably had most of the screentime out of the final 5, Sophie ended up beating him with almost 75% of the vote. Most of her fans probably couldn't single out big moments from her, but I remember her having funny under the radar moments which members generally appreciated.
B-Block [BB9] - Every week B-Block would survive every vote they were in up until the final 7, regardless that on paper some of the housemates in that groups personalities were arguably just as bad or perhaps worse than those of the luxury bedroom
Anthony [BB6] - After his closest allies were voted out back to back, Anthony ended up with just Craig and ended up winning the series. You could also argue that Eugene was generally on the outside of the group, so his 2nd place is noteworthy.
Ulrika [CBBno1curr] - All her allies evicted and the only one left standing in her group. Personally I think this is because the vote was split between one group too much while supporters of Ulrika's group really didn't have any other choice.
Alex Reid [CBBidk] - Up against Vinnie freaking Jones and beats him. Given a HUGE underdog edit throughout.

If you look at various finals, there are points where the least likely housemates can pick up support, either because they haven't been part of a "group" or the rest of their group has been evicted. Examples could be Sara (BB9), David (BB10), Mario (BB11), Sara (BB13)

I'm not saying that these people haven't been good housemates [although looking at that list there's much to be desired imo] but how much the the "underdog factor" really play into how much we like people?

DISCUSS.
