Default French Court Rejects Socialist 75% Tax Rate For Rich

http://news.sky.com/story/1031525/fr...-rate-for-rich

"French president Francois Hollande has suffered a fresh setback as the country's highest court threw out his plan to tax the ultra-wealthy at a 75% rate, saying it was unfair.
It had been one of the flagship campaign promises of Mr Hollande's election and the government has vowed to resubmit the measure.
But France's Constitutional Council ruled that the way the highly contentious tax was designed was unconstitutional."

Gérard Depardieu has become the most high-profile opponent of the proposed 75% tax rate, offering to rescind his passport in a row with the government.

I suppose that seems a bit steep but if they're the wealthiest of the wealthy then they'll surely have a fair bit of money still lying around to make up for it.

Yes of course, a system where the richest prosper at the expense of everyone else is something that's so desirable isn't it?

It will never be corrected. Capitalism is an inherently selfish thing.

Arista is incorrect yet again. It was capitalism that brought the world to it's knees a few short years ago.

The reason this was rejected in the courts, were for anomalies, such as a couple living together, and both earning 900,000euros/yr each would have have avoided this tax, but a single person earning 1.2meuros/yr would have been hit by it.

Just some issues to work out.

You can't say that just because it's the status quo now, that we shouldn't do anything about it.

China is communist in name only. There has never been a true communist state on this planet anyhow. Plus I'm not saying communism is the correct alternative so I don't know why you've brought that up.

The rampant and unfettered capitalism of recent years has served only to line the pockets of the richest, and plunge the world into an abyss of debt. It's clear that the system is toxic in it's current implementation.

So the trillion pound debt this country is saddled with doesn't come into that at all, does it?

A 75% tax isn't really feasible, those who would fall into that bracket would just be persuaded to emigrate, find loopholes and ways around having to pay that much and manage to stay out of it, I doubt it'd really generate any more revenue just like the 50% tax in this country didnt

The greatest period of growth in US history was when their tax rates were 95% on top earners. The problem is, the world has become smaller with modern travel so it's easier to move somewhere else. If other countries were actually willing to tackle the wealth disparity issue with similar tax rates, then it could work, but a lone country like France will always struggle.
