Very unlikely, Edward VIII is the only British monarch who's ever voluntarily abdicated and the Queen has no real reason to do so

Didn't she say she wasn't going to abdicate?

I would guess if she started having memory problems and health becoming a problem she may do but she does see it as a lifelong commitment, so under normal circumstances I cannot see her abdicating.

It would be very impressive if she decided to abolish the monarchy before she goes.

If she really wants to do the right thing, then she should use her power to abolish the monarchy and declare herself the very last monarch of England, and that from now on the UK will be a true democracy.

She should abolish the monarchy and the house of lords. Abolish all titles.

Yes because he went with a Working Class American woman
who was twice divorced

It was on Ch4HD last night
new info on a Evil Bishop Lang
who put up a fight using the Times paper first
the King gave up his fight
Lang Won

Edward Died in 1972

Happy days in 1932

His gig as King in 1936
was short.

[In 1929, Time magazine reported that Edward teased his sister-in-law, Elizabeth, the wife of his younger brother Albert, by calling her "Queen Elizabeth". The magazine asked if "she did not sometimes wonder how much truth there is in the story that he once said he would renounce his rights upon the death of George V – which would make her nickname come true]

Someone will have to pry that crown from her dead fingers. She has no intention of going anywhere, and only a severe mental health issue like dementia could probably force her into it.

She does still have the power to abolish the monarchy and the house of lords though.

You don't have a problem with unelected people getting to decide public policy? How can you justify it? It's anathema to democracy. How can you be okay with the elite appointing people to be part of the parliament. The parliament should be democratically elected by the people to do work for the people.

They don't get to decide public policy Alex. They're ceremonial, not actual monarchs of yore.

Then why do they exist? They do have power over the people. If they don't then what is their purpose?

Your country was created without having a monarchy in place, because rightly so, Europeans wanted to be free from the church and monarchs they left behind over here.

The purpose of them was the transition of the power from rulers to the people without abolishing their positions/status.

Since then, they have become part of history and tradition. I agree with you, I'd switch to a republic in a heart beat. The monarchy, along with the house of lords, are the last vestiges of our old empire and should be done away with.

Compared to who?

At least we can actually elect leaders. You don't even have any kind of semblance of democracy. You had Gordon Brown as a leader. Remind me again when anyone voted him into power?

At least we elect People, not Parties.

Alex why do you always have to justify why you're the better nation in every single discussion? we seem to be able to admitt out faults and so do people from other countries i've discussed as such as Canadians. Yet Americans never seem to be able to admitt any faults, and just going into every discussion with a supremacy attitude? Each country has its faults, and the monarchy no longer has any real power, it's just a tradition that we are keeping from the foundations of our country

Yes that was rare a Deal
in Blair giving him the power
it was to late as New Labour went stupid
as the People never got to Vote this Bitter Scottish Man in.

I was so glad when he was Kicked out of Power
