I don't know that they're told to - they just understand the situation - that they have to keep it entertaining or no one will watch it, and so they play up to the cameras a bit...
...just like Big Brother. It really is no different. People absolutely worshipped Gina and Dexter for "providing entertainment" even though almost every single thing they did or said was acted, exaggerated, planned, "scripted" in their own heads. The only difference is that on BB the aim is to win a single series of a show, whereas on GS, "winning" is keeping it entertaining enough / themselves popular enough to keep the show going.
They're obviously put in ridiculous situations constantly and their running commentary is scripted to an extent, although they more or less script it themselves, but it is pre-planned. But their individual relationships with each other / who their friends are / who they've fallen out with are as "real" as anything on Big Brother. Probably moreso - as they've known each other for years on and off the show, rather than trying to claim that they "love" or have deep friendships with people they've known for 6 weeks like on BB...
Anyway it's pretty irrelevant... whether you watch / like the show or not, the point stands that the assumptions being made by people who have watched zero or very little of GS about what Charlotte is like or has done over the years are for the mostpart completely inaccurate. She had a few drunken fumbles - which they don't even really show - over the first few series with one guy on the show who treated her like dirt and broke her heart, and then she broke away from him, got a boyfriend who has never appeared on the show, and has done nothing sexual since. Apparently this translates into being "a vile slut who sleeps around on camera".
In fact none of the GS girls have been particularly promiscuous. One has had a boyfriend who does sometimes appear on the show since series 2, another was engaged to one of the other GS members for years and has never done anything sexual with ANYONE else. Then there's Holly... who does sleep around a bit... and has worked her way through the males of GS... but, even she isn't on a par with the two guys who constantly sleep around on the show - which is where I think the preconception that they're all doing it comes from.
I just can't fathom why people are pretending to know what Charlotte is like on GS when they clearly are just making it up off of the top of their heads, based on what they've heard about the show in general?
