Default Do you swear in front of your parents...

..ok, I think we might have had this before but it was just something/a discussion on another forum and it was quite mixed as to who did and who didn't....so, do you..and are they ok with it if you do..?...

My dad hates swearing....I told him to p*** off once (although I thought he was my brother) and he went berserk.

Not really, oddly enough. They were definitely the ones that turned me on to it and I used to do it loads when I was a teenager like my sister does now but after a certain while my swearing found it's place. I love swear words - no shit, TiBB - but it might give the wrong impression. I don't swear all the time. I swear in front of my friends when telling stories and in long conversation and verbose posts when I'm being a sardonic arse [Read : You know you're one when you've said it instead of 'sarcastic ass' and you try and supersede it by predicting it and you try and supersede that by lalalalala I'm drunk] but I find no real contextual reason to do it if like ... my mum is making me a tuna sandwich or something.

She was always cool with me smoking dope in the kitchen because she done it herself but as liberal as she was she would always helpfully redirect me to an alternate to swearing. Which is kind of cool I guess. Being able to do it loads and get away with it in a weird way I guess. I was always conscious of that growing up.

.hmmmm, I guess that's an interesting thing as well..(and something I believe in..)...as a parent/if your parents are against something and make it a 'taboo' then does that only make you want to do it more and be counter productive to their wishes....I think it's about explaining why you'd prefer for them not to do something/the dangers/consequences etc..(not swearing, I don't mean..but in general..)..rather than say, no..you absolutely can't...and then maybe you just trigger their enquiring minds....

Well it is different for every parent as indeed it is for every child but I would say on a personal level my dads linguistic analysis back in my real learning window of about 1996-2003 went as far as "I'm drunk therefore I curse" and my mums extended to "I'm not as drunk and he shouldn't. Not in front of you.".

I reached for the heights of "Interesting points on both sides. I'll consider both sides, attempt the drinking bit, and report back with results" and kind of worked from there.

It was neither recommended nor forbidden fruit. I took the logical middle ground path that language when not overused is a great flavor to use to spice up certain dishes and is certainly not disregarded.

On that note the few people I've met online in my life who have espoused the whole "you're cursing because you have no other words to express yourself" line have been amongst the dullest I have encountered and have had nothing to say.

...hmmm, I'll remember that 'dull' bit and swear more lol..but yeah, I think/believe that it's always good to talk to your children about your own life..and a kind of reminder to them that you're a person and not just a 'parent' and that you've been through/understand everything they feel...but also, knowing that they have to also experience it for themselves and you can't/shouldn't instil things on them because as much as anything else, they're not you and their experiences may be totally different...

..obviously talking to them about dangers etc though...

..I think my biggest 'hate' in life is the phrase 'you can't...because I said so..'..type thing..I know people in general don't do that anymore but just forbidding something without explaining why because it's that explanation of your feelings/preferences that's the most important thing....

I will use light swear words infront of my mother, if I used the stronger words infront of her my father would batter me.

Away from her with my father i've heard him swear 'like a trooper' at work and so on and he wouldnt bat an eyelid if I did the same, unless it was directed at him. Its not in my nature to do it anyway. My brain seems to have some kind of automatic switch, when around anyone besides my parents I cant stop swearing, its the way people talk here. Just watch Twin Town. As soon as I am with my parents it just automatically stops.

Yeah I swear in front of my parents, I get the swearing from my mum though.

My cousin hates when I swear because she's a strong Christian and doesn't believe in it (for whatever reason), but I still swear to get on her nerves (This is Germyle we're talking about)

Yeh I do although rarely at them. Whenever football is on it's like I have Tourette's or something. I try not to swear in front of my Gran but I often forget or have to curb it at the last minute.

Oh yeah, my parents and I all swear in front of each other - in private. None of us actually swears in public though.

No, both dead now.

I once swore at my dad under my breath when I was a teenager, trying to be big in front of my mates. Earned me a light slap around the back of my head, only time he ever raised a hand to me. I was mortified that he had heard me nd I can still remember the shame I felt.
I never heard my dad swear but know he did when he was in the club bar.

I never swore at my kids and so expected the same respect back.
My son told me to eff off in front off his mate when he was 19....his bags were packed and he was out within the hour.
