It's a well-known condition. Seasonal Affective Disorder. It's lack of sunlight.
Funnily enough, because of our lousy overcast summers, it is not just a winter summer illness. Some of the best sunlight we get in this part of the world is in autumn and winter.

The darkness and gray skies are upsetting, I love the sunshine as it can be quite pretty. But not when the sun is very hot.
