Question Are England fans an obstacle to team success?

Watching supporters of the other teams this tournament - including USA's, who've really taken to football this year - the support for the teams seem to be incredibly passionate and quick to forget mistakes on the pitch.

I do wonder how the English players would react to a fanbase that wasn't so cynical and quick to boo Rooney for sub-par performances. And the inevitable "but they're paid soooo much they should be happy!!!" replies this'll obviously get from people who aren't even fans of football just go to show how hostile English fans are.

It just seems that if you see an England fan on the big screen they're either bored, drunk out of their mind or biting someone's ear off.

Fans & Media. The compairosn to England and other nations is scary. Take Holland fo rexample.. Star players Robben & RVP are adored as are star players in other Countries and all the players are really regardless of what club they play for during a tournament. Here, Rooney(Let's be real..he is the closest we have to a star player, as poor as he may be now) is hated on and booed when playing out of position and media agendas are clear from day 1... the outrage that Welbeck who has been fantastic for England and in the CL was starting over new 2 caps golden boy Lallana was embarrassing and fans and Media outlets were waiting for him to **** up rather than support him.

Ashley Cole is also hated on by England fans and the media when has been the Country's most consistent performer this era of players. Travesty Luke Shaw & Leighton ****ing Baines were picked ahead of him. All of this is never changing though, because Club football will always be the dominant thing in this country. I'm to blame too... You won't ever see me cheering for Gerrard the way Spaniards can support their club rival players. **** that twat until the day he retires.

It's been strange following twitter throughout the tournament.. the reaction from England fans to other European fans and Americans tonight is completely different. We go 1-0 down to Uruguay and every tweet becomes "same old **** England".."get so and so off".."we're awful, we're never winning a WC", it's just all negativity. Then compared to tonight when the USA went behind every tweet was positive, saying how they'd get back into it and that they still believed they could get something from the game. And then the fans that travel to the games are all bald alcoholics in their 50s looking for an excuse to get away from their wives to get drunk for a few nights. It is **** supporting England

Is it not just our negative attitude as a national in general really?

Although I do think it's interesting and a shame that after how involved, supportive and enthusiastic people's attitudes were to the London Olympics and how great they were as a result, that that kind of spirit and atmosphere couldn't have continued into other sports a couple of years down the line...that was meant to be part of the legacy after all was it not?

The atmosphere at British football is the best in the world; the other teams fans that you mention always look cheery because they don't really understand what they're watching.

I don't think so really tbh, I reckon we tend to think that our support is more critical than all the other nations when it's not necessarily true. The media of other countries can be just as quick to have a go at their team; before the WC the Italian team were getting stick from all angles because they'd been underperforming, the Mexican team got loads of stick in their country as well when they only just scraped qualification thanks to America, and Russia have now come in for a lot of criticism and they're a nation which does tend to be very demanding of their teams in general. I don't think other countries are as awash with universal support and unqualified enthusiasm like we sometimes think they are. America may be the exception as a country that is still pretty new to football, has no reason to expect much so anything is a bonus, and has the general 'American dream' attitude and the 'USA, USA, USA' thing going on

English fans are great and still some of the most committed in the world. It's true we don't tend to get all happy clappy about it but then that's always been the way here, and I don't think the criticism that Rooney etc. gets is that unfair really if he's playing poorly and falling below the standard that has to be expected of him if he is going to be our captain and supposedly our best player. I don't like the idea that fans should always be obliged to back players and never criticise them even if they screw up. And as much as everyone moans about England or certain players it doesn't mean they care any less than other countries fans about wanting to see their team succeed

No, not the fans, the fault lies with just the players who fail to inspire and really do the job they should in the really big matches once they are out on the pitch.
