Default You witness someone stealing, what would you do?

Do you tell the staff or be oblivious to the whole thing?

It happened today when someone stole two baguettes from Greggs. It's next to my work and I'm a regular so I told them behind the counter quietly to check the CCTV.

After telling them I feel extremely conflicted with my decision. Would you have said something?

I've stopped shoplifters at work before, and reported it to management. Last week one of my co-workers had a needle pulled on them though so it's not always best to confront them

If it was just 2 baguettes then I'd probably just leave it, not like the whole Greggs enterprise will crash following the event.

Although I'd really want to tell them as it's completely wrong but IDK in todays world, risky.

If the person looked like they could do with the two baguettes I probably wouldn't bother, if it it were a load of school kids I probably would, depends on the circumstances

If it was from a small business owner, yes. If it was from a big company, then nah wouldn't bother.

If it was a small child I'd let their parents know, best to nip these things in the bud as usually the little kids don't even know what their doing. When my eldest was 2, we came home from a trip to the supermarket and found a load of packs of biscuits stashed under the buggy . Just kept them tbh...

I probably wouldn't say anything unless it was really valuable.

I would definitely say something if I saw a pickpocket on the street though.

It really would depend on what they stole. Many years ago I worked in a shop and an old man (obviously not well off, frayed clothes etc) stole a bar of soap. I saw him do it, but I couldn't bring myself to say anything.
If i saw someone stealing clothes etcm, then I would say something, because even people with little money can buy cheap clothes from charity shops.

I stop people in work all the time, and I appreciate other customers telling us. Everything that gets stolen goes out of the store budget and if the budget is in surplus at the end of the year the staff get the money so the person is effectively stealing from the workers

This is why I don't why people say they don't care if it's from a large retail chain. It still affects the frontline staff not the people at the top.

Interesting comments. I think the OP was initially confusing, I don't work there it's just near to where I work.

The guy did not look like he needed "fed", he just seemed average and middle-aged. I think he was pissed off at the queue so just decided to steal instead.

Plus there's CCTV at the door. If there hadn't been CCTV I wouldn't have said anything as I wouldn't have wanted me to be a witness in any petty crime.

I am still conflicted over it, but I think reflecting on it it depends on who it is and what they steal. Not sure I would do the same thing again.
