![]() An air hostess has claimed she was made to feel like a “prostitute” when she was asked to wear high heels and make-up at work. Ruth Campion claimed at an MPs' inquiry into dress codes at work that she was required by British Airways to look “sexy” during her two year stint with the airline. She said at the hearing yesterday: “For an employer to tell me that I need to do that in order for the business to have a certain image, it made me akin to being prostituted.” Miss Campion said she felt “dehumanised” and “humiliated... to be made to specifically wear items of uniform that sexualised my appearance or enhanced my sexuality”. The inquiry was set up after agency worker Nicola Thorp, 27, arrived for work at the office of a City accountancy firm in flat shoes and was sent home when she refused to wear stilettos. http://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/br...-a3283496.html This is the protagonist Spoiler: Views? |

i agree with her in principle, but i think she is stretching her comparison a tad.
![]() Please note, prostitutes are entitled to wear what they want and should not be stereotyped |

I think it's ridiculous to insist that women wear high heels to work, look "smart" yes but you can look smart without being forced to wear painful heels for a job where you're on your feet all day especially....... Also, how exactly does it effect their business, I have never heard of anyone booking a certain flight because the staff are sexy

Yeah I don't see how not wearing heals and make up would at all effect how capable they are at their job. If take pride in their appearance when coming to work, look presentable and wear the uniform then I don't see the problem.

I'm surprised that it's not against health and safety to wear heels on a plane tbh, if your centre of gravity is already compromised and there's turbulence wouldn't that be dangerous?...
I always thought the red lipstick idea was ridic... outdated silly rules that need changing.

I think they should wear heels for boarding and getting off and change to flats for the grunt work during the flight.

By that logic the pilots should be shirtless to attract female flyers

That would be their choice though, no one should be forced to wear something they're not comfortable wearing

They sign up to wear a uniform, is there heels and make up written into that? And even if it is, woman very much have the right to get that s**t banned from working contracts, do the male flight attendants have to wear heels? I would very much doubt it, so they're allowed to have shoes that don't cause damage to their health and are allowed to be free from feeling like sex objects while serving tea & coffee, that's discrimination.

Also in these austere times they are all on Ryanair flights, who seem to have a lot of male stewards

..there is a 'drama' though which is why the MP inquiry is happening atm to look into company dress codes which are unreasonable to an employee's comfort in their job, when that discomfort is only being asked and expected of one gender/females...it would only be something that they could asked to sign up for if it was applicable to both genders...
...some of the other airline examples given are not being allowed to wear a cardigan or cover their arms because it's apparently deemed 'frumpy'...and with shop assistants..female shop assistants being asked to unbutton their blouse and 'flirt a little' with male customers... |

Last flight I was on (EasyJet, woop woop!) the flight attendant was a very flamboyantly camp Glaswegian lad. His interactions with the group of increasingly-drunk 30-40 year old guys clearly off on a "blokes holiday" actually made up the bulk of my in flight entertainment
![]() But yeah, on topic, bloody stupid job to require hells for ![]() |
