It's not going to turn the war around at the end of the day.

I'm increasingly of the opinion that the West knows that eventually Russia will gain from this war (perhaps not all of Ukraine but significant chunks of it) BUT - by the time Russia does settle with what they've got - they want it to have been so drawn out, difficult, uncomfortable & costly that they will think twice before entering another similar conflict.

Basically it needs to be that Russia can save face by saying that they succeeded in their war goals, whilst at the same time, not being able to push any further out without massive risk.
