What's in a name?

When John James came back from the diary room upset a few weeks ago he asked Josie for puffs off her fag, Josie was shocked and said "but you don't smoke". John James looked annoyed and said he could if he wanted.
Why is he hiding the fact he smokes? Why not just smoke?  And before some poeple say BS, he did not just take up smoking for the bit of Josie's ciggie that one time.
