That's a really good point, actually. Reminds me of a question to Anton in Bots. Something like, "are you cocky because you're confident, or to hide your true feelings/insecurities?"

Jem is exactly the same, an outward persona of dominance, but openly admits she doesn't have friends as close as people in the BB house. People that she's known for a week. That says a lot about her character. She doesn't seem to have a lot of redeeming qualities about her at all.

She's projecting her own unhappiness on to others. She can dominate people she knows, most of the time, but people like Aaron and Harry will automatically repel that kind of person, just like they did to the puppies.
