Paris Mayor to award Ireland fans with prestigious medal

The Mayor of Paris has announced that Ireland’s football supporters will be awarded the Medal of the City of Paris for their sportsmanship.

After three weeks spent changing tyres, singing babies to sleep and standing up (and sitting down) for the French police Irish fans will be honoured with Paris's most prestigious honour for their efforts.

On Tuesday Mayor Anne Hidalgo told French media that the Ireland supporters have been "exemplary in their sportsmanship" and distinguished themselves by the "atmosphere" they created from the start of Euro 2016.

She has written to President Michael D Higgins to tell him of the award and further details for the medal ceremony will be announced at a later date.

Martin O’Neill’s side exited the tournament on Sunday following a 2-1 defeat to France in Lyon in the last 16 of the competition.

An estimated 100,000 Irish fans travelled to France during the tournament. O’Neill described them as “a credit to the country” as they made headlines across the world for their behaviour in France.
