KIDS’ favourite the Mr Men is set to portray the French as impolite, ill-mannered and SMELLY.
A new TV cartoon version of big-nosed Mr Rude has given him a Gallic accent, and shows him inviting children to pull his finger — then loudly breaking wind.
He is one of several characters to star in the series on Five, based on the classic books by Roger Hargreaves.
But Mr Rude is the only one with a non-British voice. He also loses the English-style top hat he originally wore.
Triangle
A spokesman for the French ambassador said yesterday Mr Rude was “unlikely to improve Anglo-French relations”.
A Five spokesman said: “The fact Mr Rude has a French accent is meant to be light-hearted and tongue-in-cheek, and no offence to the French.”
But the show’s makers Chorion said the English view of the French as impolite was well-known.
Other characters have had makeovers for the TV series, which starts this month. Mr Strong has turned from a square shape into a triangle, and Little Miss Naughty has a new curly hairdo.
