If so then given the gramma used (not saying "identical to") it would mean expressing or resulting in identity.
The sentence could then be seen as meaning you could express an identity of yourself (one for show you most commonly use in a fake environment), but not be yourself (since the identity you are expressing isnt your true nature but mearly a facet of it used to diguise the whole).
I didnt see the conversation so dont know the context but it would be ironic if people who call Marcus crude (i.e. lacking in intellectual subtlety) do so partially because he is actually too subtle for them to understand.
