I've kinda been fascinated by vampires in stories, TV and movies since I was a kid. Not obsessively so, but I appreciated the odd entertainment and understood the mythology, fear and sexual connotations of them. From Nosferatu to the 1930s Bela Lugosi film to Hammer horror and even the lesbian vampire films of the 1970s, vampires have been a recurring feature in horror movies and TV shows with the 1990s seeming like the last peak in my memory with Buffy (movie and TV show), Angel, Bram Stoker's Dracula (Coppola), Dracula: Dead and Loving It, From Dusk Til Dawn, Blade etc.
Then vampires appeared sporadically in Van Helsing, Supernatural, Underworld, Night Watch.
So why in the last few years have vampires become increasingly popular again? And why do they appear to be aimed more at teenagers or women atm? I've never read the Twilight books nor seen the movies. I don't watch either True Blood or The Vampire Diaries. I haven't yet watched the Lost Boys sequel, Lost Boys: The Tribe, but am aware the third film is released this year. And even my beloved Nip/Tuck had an episode involving a vampire fettish.
So what is the big deal with vampires in film and TV atm? Is it at its peak or will it twindle once the Twilight movies are over? What exactly am I missing from vampire orientated media in the late 2000s/early 2010?
