Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner, former Oasis man Liam Gallagher, Morrissey and John Lennon are among those who've made the last eight in NME's search for the Ultimate Musical Icon of the last 60 years.

As well as the above, Amy Winehouse, Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie and Nirvana's Kurt Cobain have also made the cut, which began earlier this year with a shortlist of 60 people.

To celebrate NME's 60th birthday, we're going to be crowning the ultimate musical icon from the magazine's lifetime and the current shortlist of eight will be narrowed down to four in the coming weeks.

To find out more about the search for NME's Ultimate Musical Icon of the last 60 years and to see who The Cribs, The Maccabees, Grimes, Howler, Richard Hawley, Wretch 32, Santigold and the Mystery Jets name as their ultimate icon, pick up the new issue of NME, which is on newsstands now or available digitally. There's also posters of the likes of Bowie, Gallagher, Cobain and Winehouse, with more to come in the following week's issue.

The shortlist for the NME's Ultimate Icon of the last 60 years is as follows:

Alex Turner
Amy Winehouse
David Bowie
Jimi Hendrix
John Lennon
Kurt Cobain
Liam Gallagher
Morrissey

Now I love Alex/the Monkeys, but in no way should he be on that list, not sure Amy should either
