Default A Gamblers Mind

At first I was disappointed by Dexter's decision to choose the £88800. And his reasoning for not choosing the higher number seemed hesitant. But his assertion that he didn't see this figure is feasable. This hesitancy was probably because he was surprized at the venom of the attacks on him when he felt his thought processes were unfairly judged.

How often have we overlooked things because we were intent on trying to find a particular item. He said he was looking for patterns and the numbers that were lucky to him which were multiples of fours and eights.

So with the threat of a possible plot twist in the back of his mind he tempered his desire for a high-ish number, a belief that someone would go lower,(even as selflessly low as £1), by picking a number which he considered lucky. The number eight was probably a number he defaulted to in his gambling days and is known to be lucky in Asian culture. Also he is known to have been a quite unsuccessful gambler so you have to add a bit of poor judgement into the mix.
